Whether it is your first holiday season in Czechia or not, it is always a unique and unforgettable time. Follow our tips and do not miss these Christmas events in Prague, Brno, Pilsen, Olomouc, and Hradec Králové.

 

Light park

Prague

Who doesn’t like Christmas lights? Right next to the Vltava river in the area of Žluté lázně, a new light park has been opened. You will see many light decorations, ornaments, and original sculptures full of references to Christmas and Prague. 

When temperatures drop, winter comes and we can enjoy winter sports like skiing or ice skating. In Prague, you will find several indoor and outdoor ice skating rings. They are all open now till the end of February up to the end of March. There are designated areas for children where you can teach them how to skate. Visitors find here rental services where they can rent a helmet or ice skates, as well as warm drinks and refreshments.

For admirers of classical music, there is a festive gala concert performed by Dvorak Symphony Orchestra Prague. It takes place in one of the most beautiful halls in Prague, the Mirror Chapel in Klementinum. Come and enjoy Silent Night, Jingle Bells, and many more carols.

 

Brno

National Theatre Brno will play The Nutcracracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchyikovsky in the Janáček Theatre. It tells the story of Clara and transports us from jouyous Christmas celebration into a magical world of Clara’s dreams. It is a fairytale ballet for the whole family

Maybe you won’t see the golden pig this year, but you can definitely see a fairytale Christmas with nativity scenes. This exhibition is based on the most famous Czech fairy tales and illustration work of Veronika Balcarová. Newer nativity scenes from Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia from wood, paper, ceramic, etc. will be presented. You will find the exhibition at Letohrádek Mitrovských on Veletržní street.

Right before Christmas Eve, the Advent Gospels will take place. The traditional guest of the pre-Christmas concerts, Stella Jones with her ensemble, returns to the Czech Republic! The award-winning gospel group the Christmas Gospel Singers, has charmed audiences around the world with their vocal performances. 

 

Pilsen

Christmas is also about giving and receiving. You can make some handmade gifts, or go and buy them at 

Mint Market which will take place in Pilsen in DEPO2015. It is connected with Design week and Bookfest. The entry is free and you can find here various Czech products. Don’t forget to check out our tips for gifts.

Do you crave some culture? The DJKT Theatre in Pilsen has prepared two Christmas performances. One is a ballet called Princess with the Golden Star based on a traditional Czech movie. The other is an opera performance of Jakub Jan Ryba’s Czech Christmass Mass. Although it is sung in Czech, it will win you over with its pleasant tones.

Pilsen Zoo organizes its traditional Advent program perfect for children. From the lighting of the Christmas tree to New Year’s Eve Morning Competition, there is something for everyone. Take your children and friends and enjoy Christmas accompanied by a variety of animals.

Olomouc

Do you like running and love the holidays? Then Christmas Night Run is the perfect event for you. When it gets dark, runners put on their Christmas hats or costumes, turn on headlamps and run. You can take your children too as they have a special race for them.

Starting the 18 November, the legendary Christmas Market in Olomouc has begun. Apart from various Christmas drinks and food, you can enjoy a rich program full of concerts and performances. You will hear traditional carols from artists and children from art schools. 

One concert not to be missed this Advent is the one by Tarja Turunen called “Christmas Peace”. It is full of new energy, hope, and peace.Make sure to grab your tickets before it sells out.

 

Hradec Králové

What is the best way to see Christmas markets and lights? From above! Go on a night tour of the White Tower and admire the beautiful views. This renaissance-style tower is the highest landmark in Hradec Králové. 

Hradecká nokturna will perform an Advent concert called Songs about the Mystery of Birth at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It tells the biblical story about Jesus’ birth accompanied by splendid tones of percussion, baroque guitar, traverso, and many more. 

Christmas Market in Hradec Králové offers many performances full of dance, carols as well as theatre plays. Moreover, you can take a ride at the carrousel, try your luck at the shooting gallery and visit a circus tent. You can also look forward to demonstrations of blacksmithing making a horseshoe or a four-leaf clover. Make sure to try some of our typical hot wines
