Žďár nad Sázavou: A Spot That No Pilgrim Should Miss

Do you feel proud of your roots when someone tells you that they are going to spend a vacation in the place you have been growing up? I definitely do. And it happens to me quite frequently since I come from Žďár nad Sázavou, a town famous for its exceptional baroque structure of the Pilgrimage Church of St. Jan Nepomuk that is listed in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage Sites.

Tip for a Trip: Moravská Třebová – the Hidden Renaissance Pearl

There are two kinds of people: those who prefer to spend their free time in busy cities and those who like to slow down a bit in more peaceful places. If you belong to the latter group, you probably won’t enjoy that much cities like Prague, Brno or Ostrava or places crammed with tourists such as Český Krumlov or Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape. In that case, small towns such as Moravská Třebová may be perfect for you. It’s a beautiful small town mostly forgotten by Czech and foreign tourists alike. And that’s a big shame.

Tip for a Trip: Znojmo – the Thing that Wine and Pickles Have in Common

If you’re visiting South Moravia, there is no way you wouldn’t eventually visit the town of Znojmo. I mean, how could you not? It’s historically and culturally one of the most important places in South Moravia and for a good reason! Znojmo is famous for its wine, pickles, history and beautiful architecture. You could say there is something interesting for everyone.

Kutná Hora: The Silver City

Did you know that Kutná Hora can be loosely translated to “digging mountain”? No wonder – Kutná Hora is hiding a whole new world underneath its surface. To this day not all underground tunnels have been discovered. Many people disappeared in them, never to be seen again. And that’s just the beginning!. Kutná Hora is packed with mystery, history and great restaurants. It is a very popular destination that can keep you busy for the whole day.

Tip for a Trip: Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape – from Church-burning Pagans to Nobility

There are many beautiful places in the Czech Republic, but one can’t simply visit them all. Unless visiting interesting places is your job – then you may have the time to do so. It’s a shame but I think I might have a solution to your problem. Near the Austrian and Slovak border, there is an area where you can find some of the most beautiful châteaus in the Czech Republic, practically pristine nature and a lot of history stretching all the way back to the Moravian Empire. By the way, this whole area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Tip for a Trip: Moravian Karst

Unless you’re a passionate fan of spelunking, you might think that caves are boring. After all, they’re dark, wet, narrow, and probably full of bats – who are known carriers of dangerous diseases, among other things – and that’s pretty much about it, right? No? If you are one of those people who agree with that statement, then let me try to change your mind because there is one area in the Czech Republic known for its fascinating caves. It lies in the middle of beautiful forests that look like from brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. But don’t worry – there are no evil old witches lurking within!

Krkonoše Mountains: To the Top of the Czech Republic!

Did you know that there are a lot of mountains in the Czech Republic? I believe that to some tourists calling the Krkonoše area “mountains” must sound like a little bit of an overstatement because the tallest point, Sněžka, has ‘only’ 1603 metres. Despite that Sněžka and the rest of Krkonoše mountains may not fulfil all your mountain climbing dreams, they still have a lot to offer! In fact, I could write several articles just about this beautiful area but today I am going to cover just the best of the best.
