ETA – New Requirement For Travels to the United Kingdom

#ImmiUpdatesCzechia Are you planning to visit the United Kingdom from the Czech Republic? Starting 2 April 2025, you will need a special authorisation called ETA to enter the country. This new system is obligatory for visitors from visa-exempt countries, including European Union nationals. Learn more about the process and costs in this article!

Don’t forget to apply for ETA prior to your travels

What is an ETA?

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a digital permission required for travellers visiting the UK for short stays, including tourism, business, short-term study, and certain paid engagements. It is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport and is not a visa but a pre-travel authorisation

Purpose of Implementation

The introduction of the ETA aims to enhance UK border security by screening travellers before they arrive, thereby strengthening the immigration system

Travellers from the EU, including Czech citizens, planning to visit the UK on or after 2 April 2025, should ensure they obtain an ETA to facilitate a smooth entry process.

Application Process

Travellers can apply for an ETA through the official UK government website or via the UK ETA app

The application involves providing biographic and biometric details (in the form of a facial image) and answering questions related to suitability and criminality. Most applicants receive a decision within minutes; however, it is recommended to apply at least three working days before the intended travel date to accommodate any additional reviews.

NOTE: Each traveller must get their own ETA, including children and babies.

Validity and Cost

ETA costs £10 and is valid for two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first. It permits multiple visits to the UK, each lasting up to six months

Exemptions

In case you already have an existing UK visa, a residency permit, or Irish citizenship, you are exempt from the ETA requirement.

Another exemption is for ETA eligible nationals who are transiting airside through the UK – not applicable for those transiting landside (passing UK border controls).

  1. Hi, students holding long term Czech Visa, who do not belong to EU nations, will also be allowed to travel to UK on ETA or do they need to apply for a visit visa

    1. Hi, students holding a long-term Czech visa who are not from an ETA-eligible country will need to apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa instead of an ETA. The ETA is only available to nationals of visa-exempt countries, such as EU member states, the US, Canada, Australia, etc.

Since your eligibility for ETA depends on your nationality rather than your Czech visa status, you must check whether your home country is on the ETA-eligible list. If not, you will need a Visitor Visa to travel to the UK.

Would you like help with checking your eligibility or applying for a UK visa? 😊
