Updated Conditions For Ukrainian Citizens in 2025

#LifeInCzechia The Czech Republic has introduced updated conditions for Ukrainian citizens residing in the country due to the ongoing war. Under the new regulations, temporary protection status has been extended. But, there are more changes regarding passport requirements and even economic migration programs. Find out more about it in this article!

Temporary Protection

Temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens has been extended until March 31, 2025. Moreover, the Senate approved an amendment to Lex Ukraine 7 allowing further extension until March 31, 2026, and easing the transition to long-term residence. After President Petr Pavel signs the amendment, Ukrainian citizens who have been under temporary protection in the Czech Republic for at least 2 years and are economically self-sufficient will be eligible for long-term residency.

Holders of temporary protection have free access to the labor market. On top of that, they can apply for retraining courses, including Czech language classes. Be aware that employers must register all employees under temporary protection, including those working on DPČ (agreement to perform work) and DPP (agreement to complete a job) contracts.

In case the validity of your Ukrainian passport expires, a new valid passport is not required to obtain and keep your temporary protection in the Czech Republic.

Short/Long-Term Residence Permit

Ukrainian citizens residing in the Czech Republic with a short-term or long-term residence permit must have both a work permit and a residency permit to stay and work legally in the country. Those with long-term residence permits can remain and work in the country as long as they comply with the purpose of their issued permit.

A valid passport is required for residency extensions. If your passport is no longer valid, you must submit an application and request an extension for submitting your passport (even repeatedly).

Permanent Residence

Ukrainian citizens with a permanent residence permit in the Czech Republic have free access to the labor market and do not need a valid passport to maintain their residency status. Even after your passport expires, your permanent residence permit remains valid

Additionally, you have the right to apply for a foreigner’s passport if you can’t obtain a new national passport due to circumstances beyond your control.

Economic Migration Programs

As of January 1, 2024, the Czech Republic has reopened its economic migration programs for Ukrainian citizens who have not been granted temporary or international protection. These include:

  • Qualified Worker Program
  • Highly Qualified Worker Program and Scientific and Key Personnel Program
  • Special Work Visa (for agricultural, food, and forestry workers)
