#LifeInCzechia Are you a foreign student in the Czech Republic looking to make some extra money? Or maybe to gain more experience in your field? Then finding a job is the right choice. But can you work on your current residence permit? Well, it depends. Let’s discover your options in the article.
The purpose of your stay is key
Long-term Residence Permit For The Purpose Of Studies
This type of long-term residence permit is intended for third-country nationals who want to study in the Czech Republic for periods longer than 90 days. To obtain this residence permit, your studies need to correspond with Section 64 of Act No. 326/1999 Coll. This includes:
- University-accredited study program
- Language and professional preparation for studies of a university-accredited study program
- Secondary school or higher vocational studies carried out as part of an exchange program
With this residence permit, you have free access to the labor market. That means you can work in Czechia without any additional permits.
One-year Visa-free Stay
If you are a holder of a valid long-term residence permit or a long-term visa for the purpose of studies issued by another EU Member State, you can stay in the Czech Republic without a visa for as long as 1 year. Here, you also have free access to the labor market.
NOTE: Long-term residence permits from Ireland and Denmark are exempt from the visa-free stay.
Long-term Residence Permit For The Purpose Of “Other”
This type of long-term residence permit is intended for third-country nationals who want to stay in the Czech Republic for periods longer than 90 days, whose purpose of stay cannot be categorized as “studies” under Section 64 of Act No. 326/1999 Coll. This includes educational activities such as:
- Non-accredited university study program

- Secondary school or higher vocational studies that are NOT carried out as part of an exchange program
- Participation in other educational courses and programs conducted by institutions that cannot be classified under the Education Act or the Higher Education Act
With this residence permit, you don’t have free access to the labor market. If you want to work in the Czech Republic, you need an additional work permit.
NOTE: To be able to work based on an Agreement to complete a job (or DPP – “dohoda o provedení práce” in Czech), you must have a free acces to the labour market.
