The 30th of April 2017, Brno will celebrate Walpurgis Night or “Pálení čarodějnic” (Burning of the Witches) to mark the beginning of a new season and the return of nature’s fertility. Actually, this celebration is meant to burn away witches and demons and the ashes were used as fertilizers for the crops. This festivity is celebrated by many countries in Europe: Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Denmark and Sweden.
What is special about this celebration is also the day after: the day of Those in Love when couples kiss under blossomed cherry trees. It is a local equivalent to the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
How and where can you celebrate it?
In the Czech Republic, people light up huge bonfires and straw witches at night while getting together around beers and a barbecue. Children come with their parents usually dressed as witches and activities are organized to entertain them.
In the city of Brno there are usually bonfires in various districts. One of the bonfires takes place in the sports and recreation area Hněvkovského, Brno-South. Check the event out here.
Also, Brno has its own music festival to celebrate Walpurgis Night! On the 28th and 29th of April 2017: the “Čarodějáles” festival! In fact, it is celebrating its 10th anniversary in this year. This two-days open air music festival is a great way to go out this weekend and enjoy great music with friends! More info here and on the festival’s website.
Walpurgis night is celebrated all over the Czech Republic, go see it for yourself in Brno this weekend!
