Mental Health Strategies for Moving

#LifeInCzechia Moving to a new place can be an exciting adventure, but it also comes with a unique set of challenges, including the potential strain on your mental health. Adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings, building new relationships, and coping with the upheaval can be overwhelming. However, by prioritizing self-care and implementing strategies to support your mental well-being, you can navigate this transitional period with greater ease. 

Personal Experience

I grew up the daughter of a Marine and haven’t lived anywhere for more than 4 ½ years continuously. With each move I had to start new, new place, new people, new everything. Each move was stressful in their own way so I found it important to try and take care of my mental health. When I was much younger I would journal as a way to cope with the stress and keep a healthy mental state. I also found it easier to connect with people because I was young and forced to go to school but as an adult with a busy schedule it can be harder to meet people and harder on your mental health. 

In this blog post, we will explore a range of practical and effective ways to take care of your mental health after moving to a new place. Every person has their own ways of coping so we’ll be discussing some ways I’ve used in the past and some ways I’ve never used.

Ways to Take Care of Your Mental Health:

  • Acknowledge and Accept Your Feelings

Moving to a new place often entails leaving behind familiarity, support networks, and a sense of belonging. It’s normal to experience a range of emotions, including sadness, anxiety, and even loneliness. Recognize that these feelings are a natural part of the transition process and allow yourself to grieve the loss while being compassionate towards yourself. You also need to remember that acknowledging and accepting your feelings will take time so don’t feel rushed during the process. 

  • Allow Yourself Time to Adjust

Moving to a new place is a significant life change, and it’s important to recognize that adjustment takes time. Allow yourself to experience a range of emotions and acknowledge that it’s normal to feel a bit unsettled initially. Understand that building a new life and establishing a support system takes time and patience. With each day you’ll feel more adjusted. It’s important to keep in mind that it may take longer to adjust than it would for others so don’t feel stressed when it takes you longer.

  • Explore Your New Environment

Immerse yourself in your new surroundings by exploring and discovering the unique features and attractions of the area. Engage in activities that resonate with your interests, such as visiting museums, parks, local markets, or attending community events. Embracing the new experiences and opportunities your new location has to offer can enhance your sense of connection and belonging. While exploring you may find places that remind you of your old home, this can bring comfort and help you adjust more easily because of the familiarity.

  • Establish a Routine

Creating a structured daily routine can provide stability and a sense of normalcy after moving to a new place. Designate specific times for work, leisure, exercise, socializing, and personal hobbies. This will help you regain a sense of normalcy and provide a framework for your day. A well-balanced routine can help you manage your time effectively, reduce stress, and establish a sense of control over your new environment. Your routine doesn’t need to be strict. Having something as simple as grabbing a coffee in the morning will help you get out and have the chance to make connections.

  • Engage in Physical Activity

Exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining good mental health. Engaging in physical activity releases endorphins, which elevate mood and reduce stress. Explore your new surroundings by taking walks, joining a local gym, or participating in community sports. Not only will exercise benefit your mental health, but it will also help you discover new places and potentially meet like-minded individuals. There are so many benefits to engaging in physical activity and so many different types of physical activity that you should be able to find something you enjoy.

  • Build a Support Network

Developing a support system is essential after moving to a new place. Seek out opportunities to meet people who share your interests or join community groups and organizations. Engage in local community groups, social clubs, or online platforms to meet new people. Attend local events or consider volunteering for a cause you’re passionate about. Cultivating meaningful relationships can provide a sense of belonging and emotional support during this transitional period. After meeting new people maintain your connections by attending events invited to or ask if you can attend events and continue to grow your social network.

  • Stay Connected with Loved Ones

Moving to a new place doesn’t mean severing ties with your existing support network. Maintain regular communication with family and friends through phone calls, video chats, or social media. This can also connect back to establishing a routine as moving to a new place can cause you to be busier than you expected. Deciding on a time or day in which you can connect with your loved ones whether that be by phone call, video chat, or even social media will give you a chance to feel more grounded. These connections can provide comfort, advice, and a reminder that you’re not alone. Sharing your experiences, thoughts, and concerns with loved ones can provide comfort, emotional validation, and a sense of continuity. Your loved ones will also benefit from keeping in touch as it could lessen any stress or worries they may feel from your move.

  • Practice Self-Care

Self-care is crucial for maintaining good mental health even before moving to a new place. Set aside time each day to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This can include exercise, reading, journaling, practicing mindfulness or meditation, taking a long bath, or pursuing a hobby. Prioritize self-care as an integral part of your daily routine. During the initial stages of relocation, it’s easy to neglect self-care amidst the flurry of tasks and adjustments. However, taking care of your physical and emotional well-being is crucial for maintaining good mental health. If you incorporate self-care into your routine it will be easier to adjust and help figure out what you’re feeling about the move.

  • Seek Professional Help if Needed

If you find it challenging to cope with the emotional strain of relocating, consider seeking professional support. Mental health professionals, such as therapists or counselors, can provide guidance, coping strategies, and a safe space for you to process your emotions. They can assist you in navigating the unique challenges of adjusting to a new place and help you develop effective coping mechanisms. If you’re not comfortable with a one on one therapist or counselor you could consider finding a support group where you can meet others who understand what you’re going through while still seeking professional help.

  • Embrace a Positive Mindset

Adopting a positive mindset can significantly impact your mental health after moving to a new place. Focus on the opportunities, growth, and new experiences that lie ahead. Cultivate gratitude by acknowledging the positive aspects of your relocation journey. Practice positive affirmations and surround yourself with inspiring and supportive individuals who uplift your spirits. Reward yourself even after small achievements. It’s alright to allow yourself days where you do absolutely nothing, however, you need to keep a positive attitude so that you don’t fall into a depression or culture shock.


Relocating to a new place offers a fresh start and exciting possibilities. However, it’s crucial to prioritize your mental well-being during this transitional phase. By acknowledging and accepting your feelings, allowing yourself time to adjust, exploring your new environment, establishing a routine, engaging in physical activities, building a support network, staying connected with loved ones, practicing self-care, seeking professional help if/when needed, and embracing a positive mindset, you can effectively take care of your mental health after moving. Remember, patience, self-compassion, and resilience are key as you embark on this transformative journey of creating a new life in a new place.
