Free Czech Language Courses in 2026

For many foreigners living in the Czech Republic, learning the language starts as a personal goal.

At some point, it becomes something more important.

If you are planning to apply for permanent residence, Czech is no longer optional. You will need to prove your language skills at A2 level. This is one of the key requirements for staying in the country long term.

What many expats do not realize is that there has been a way to make this journey easier. The Labour Office has been offering free Czech language courses for foreigners.

But starting in 2026, the rules are changing.

What is changing in 2026

The Czech Labour Office is introducing stricter conditions for approving Czech language retraining courses.

The reason is simple. Public funding is limited, and the system is being adjusted to support those who need it most.

This means that getting approved will no longer be as straightforward as before.

For many applicants, it will require more planning and a better understanding of the process.

Who will have the highest chance of approval

Under the new rules, priority will be given to specific groups of foreigners.

Applicants who have not yet taken a Czech language course funded by the Labour Office will have an advantage.

Another important factor is your situation on the labour market. If Czech language skills can clearly improve your job opportunities, your chances of approval are higher.

In short, the system is shifting towards people who need Czech not only for daily life, but also for work and integration.

Important limitations you should know

Before you apply, there are a few key things you should keep in mind.

You cannot apply repeatedly for the same type of course.
If you have already completed a Czech language course funded by the Labour Office in the past, you will most likely not be eligible again.
The number of approved courses is limited.
Approval is never guaranteed and depends on individual assessment.

This means that timing and preparation matter more than ever.

Why this matters if you plan to stay long term

If your goal is permanent residence in the Czech Republic, reaching A2 level in Czech is essential.

These courses can help you prepare for the official exam, improve your communication in everyday situations, and make your life in Czechia easier.

They can also increase your chances of successfully completing the permanent residence process.

But with stricter rules coming in 2026, relying on this option without planning ahead can be risky.

Plan ahead and use this opportunity wisely

The biggest mistake you can make is assuming that this option will always be available.

With limited capacity and stricter approval, it is important to think ahead.

If you are eligible and have not used this opportunity yet, it may be the right time to consider applying.
