Changes to the Czech A2 Language Exam in 2026

#LifeInCzechia Are you planning to apply for permanent residency in the Czech Republic? Listen up! The A2 Czech language exam is getting a makeover. There is nothing to worry about, but it is definitely something worth knowing before you show up at the test center.

Prepare for your A2 Czech exam.

The Czech A2 exam is becoming more practical, more communicative, and more aligned with real life. The level stays the same – just with slightly refreshed tasks.

What Remains Untouched

Let’s take a look at what is not altered:

  • The level remains A2. It’s not secretly turning into B1 or B2.
  • The certificate and the exam dates stay as they are.
  • The passing threshold remains 60%.
  • Maximum points are unchanged:

    • Writing (Psaní): 20 points
    • Speaking (Mluvení): 40 points
    • Reading (Čtení): 25 points
    • Listening (Poslech): 25 points

The exam is not getting harder. Just smarter.

What Is Changing

From 11 April 2026, the exam puts a stronger focus on real-life communication.
The changes affect Writing and Speaking only.

The overall points remain the same – only the internal structure is different.

Reason for the Change

Language exams everywhere get updated from time to time – and this one is aligning with international testing standards.

The Czech institutions also want to check skills that actually matter in everyday life:

  • Can you communicate in simple but real situations?
  • Can you handle basics at the doctor, in the office, with your landlord?
  • Do you know the vocabulary you’ll actually need?

The goal it to make sure the exam reflects real integration needs in everyday life in the Czech Republic.

When Do the Changes Start?

The new testing starts on 11 April 2026.

If your exam is scheduled on or after this date, you’ll be taking the new version of the A2 test.

If your date is before 11 April, you’re doing the old version.

You do not need to worry about anything. You’ll get a confirmation in early 2026.

How to Prepare

You’ve got plenty of time – and plenty of support.

Start with this:

  • Go through all materials on the official website.
  • Check both the old and the new model tests.
  • Try the Writing and Speaking tasks yourself.
  • If you’re taking a Czech course, tell your teacher about the new format (they will want to adjust lessons for you).

More prep materials, like an interactive test, updated handbook, and more samples, will be released gradually.
