Autumn. We all have certain memories that we connect with this very special time of year. The leaves are changing, the air is becoming brisk, and the mushroom-hunting season is in full force. But we start to realize that we don’t have much time before the snow starts to fall. But you may be saying to yourself, “Oh no! I need to take advantage of these last few weeks of nice weather! What can I do?”
Fear not, for I have the answers.
For many Czechs, Autumn is reserved for mushroom picking, beer drinking, and barbecuing. But here are some hand-picked events that we think you will love.
The Velká pardubická is a historic steeplechase that has been taking place every year in Pardubice, the Czech Republic since 1874. The track is about 6.9 km long, and the horses and riders have to clear 31 obstacles before the finish line. This track also boasts one of the most difficult jumps in the world, known as Big Taxi’s Trench, at which the horse must jump over a hedge and a large trench without falling. You don’t want to miss the 124th edition of this race, especially because Jan Faltejsek and his horse Orphee des Blins are trying for their third consecutive victory. The event takes place on Sunday, October 12, 2014.
Rožmberk Fish Harvest
If horses aren’t your thing, maybe fish are! About two kilometers north of the town Třeboň is the Rožmberk Pond. Every year on the second weekend of October, thousands of people flock to this famous pond, affectionately nicknamed the “Czech Sea,” to witness the fishermen traditionally harvest the fish. They get started pretty early, about 7 o’clock in the morning, but they have activities all day ranging from beer and wine tastings, freshly prepared fish dishes, and an accompanying program. Aside from the biggest event on the Rožmberk Pond, the harvest happens all around the the Třeboň Area from October 8 to November 22. Here is the full schedule of harvests.
Bohemian Paradise Hike
Autumn is one of the best times for outdoor activities. As the leaves change and begin to fall, the landscape starts to come alive and show its true beauty. One of the greatest places to hike amidst this beauty is in Bohemian Paradise. With its amazing wooded valleys and rock formations, Bohemian paradise is one of the most beautiful places in the Czech Republic. And if hiking isn’t for you, the town of Turnov within the park has some of the best artisans in the world who craft intricate and beautiful wood carvings and glass jewelry. Turnov, the heart of Bohemian Paradise, is about an hour away from Prague.
