Why Can’t I Download Certain Czech Apps from Google Play?

#LifeInCzechia As part of settling down in the Czech Republic, it might also include downloading Czech apps of certain companies – like ČSOB’s online banking or the Pilsen virtual card. But wait – it doesn’t work. Why do you struggle using Google Play, and how to fix it? Learn more in our article!

Google Play is not tied to your current location.

Why It Happens

Google Play customizes the app store based on your Google account’s registered country, not your current location. This means some apps developed specifically for the Czech market may not even show up in your Play Store search. Here’s why:

  • Geographic restrictions: Developers can limit app availability to specific countries.
  • Local payment methods: Some apps require Czech-specific payment options.
  • Localized content: News, transport apps, or digital services often target Czech users only.
  • Account region settings: If your Google Play account is still set to another country, Czech apps may not be visible.
  • Cache issues: Sometimes the Play Store simply needs a reset.

How to Check and Fix It

Here’s a quick guide on how to set your Google Play account:

  • Check your account country:
Go to Google Play Country Settings and check which country is currently active for your account. If you’ve recently relocated to the Czech Republic, you may need to switch countries – but be aware, this is only possible once per year and requires a local payment method.
  • Clear cache and data:
Sometimes, Google Play needs a little nudge. Try clearing cache and data from the Play Store app in your phone settings.
  • Check device compatibility:
Not all apps are available for all devices.
  • Use a VPN (with caution):
Some people use VPNs to spoof their location, but this may violate Google’s terms of service and doesn’t always solve the problem.
  • Contact the app developer:
You can reach out and ask if there are plans to make the app available in other countries or for more devices.

Final Tip for New Expats
