The Czech Republic can be proud of several spa towns, some of which are world famous. In all these charming Czech towns you’ll find stunning contemporary architecture, rich cultural life (for example, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which is well known around the world) and, of course, healing springs, which attract thousands of spa guests every year. Whether your intention is to undergo therapeutic water treatments or simply relax and rejuvenate your mind and soul, a trip to a spa in the Czech Republic is the right thing for everybody.
Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary, internationally known as Carlsbad, is a charming and renowned spa town in western Bohemia. The city of Karlovy Vary lies on the banks of rivers Teplá and Eger only 120 km outside of Prague, which makes it a perfect weekend getaway destination. Carlsbad was founded by Charles IV in the 14th century after he accidentally discovered a thermal spring while hunting.
The current appearance of the city boasts a typical spa architecture – beautifully and intricately decorated houses from the 18th and 19th century – original buildings were destroyed during natural disasters. Here you can enjoy first-class bathing in numerous spas and wellness centers but must also taste the curative mineral water. Do not forget the world-famous Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which is held here every year in July. Visit Carlsbad and experience a true European spa.
Mariánské Lázně
Mariánské Lázně is the most romantic spa town in the Czech Republic located near Karlovy Vary. This picturesque town attracts visitors thanks to its unique charm, which is reflected both in the architecture and in the surrounding countryside, but also in the healing effects of local water springs.
If you want to avoid crowds, Marianske Lazne is the right spot for you, as tourists are mainly focused on Karlovy Vary. The city of Mariánské Lázně lies in a valley surrounded by forests and dominates the landscape with its majestic buildings, colonnades, and parks. Most local development belongs to the golden era of spa resorts. In the 19th century, the city was a headquarters for the social elite – aristocrats, celebrities and members of the European aristocracy descended here for a spa treatment in the healing waters containing carbon dioxide.
Luhačovice
In the beautiful surroundings of southern Moravia, you will find the charming spa town Luhačovice. Located near the Austrian border, it has an ideal location and is easy to reach both from Prague and Vienna. Luhacovice is famous not only as a spa but also for its unique architecture built in the early 20th century by architect Dušan Jurkovič.
Here we can admire the fascinating villas, houses in a charming alpine style from the 19th and early 20th century, buildings in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, but also modern functionalist buildings. The natural environment in which the spa is built adds to its fairy-tale charm. Luhačovice is a perfect choice if you’re looking for a lively spa town within the attractive natural environment.
