Susana from Spain: The multicultural atmosphere in Brno

Last April marked one year since I moved to the Czech Republic. As a Spanish girl, I was pleasantly surprised by its landscapes and its multicultural atmosphere, especially in Brno, a city that feels welcoming to everyone.

Moving abroad

Moving to another country is not always easy. There are many things to think about before and after the move, and the journey is only the beginning. In my experience, moving to this country was not simple. As soon as you arrive, the language can be overwhelming, and even small things like a different currency can feel frustrating.

When I started my life here, I didn’t know much about the Czech lifestyle or the kind of people I would meet. The multicultural atmosphere was something that pleasantly surprised me.

Multicultural atmosphere

In Brno, people from diverse cultures and backgrounds live side by side, creating a vibrant and inclusive environment. Throughout the year, the city hosts a variety of cultural events and celebrations, such as Indický večer v Brně, Argentina Culture Celebration Day, and Brasil Fest Brno. These events introduce new customs and traditions to the local community while creating opportunities for people to connect and share experiences.

What surprised me most was how welcoming the city feels and how peacefully people coexist. While cultural differences naturally exist, the level of respect for diversity is truly admirable. You begin to notice how close people can feel once you understand their ways of thinking and living.

Multicultural events

During my time here, I had the opportunity to attend events like Argentina Culture Day and Indian Culture Day. At these gatherings, I observed how warmly traditions from outside the Czech Republic are embraced. For example, during Argentina Day, many locals spoke or practiced Spanish and showed genuine enthusiasm for the food and culture.

As a Spanish girl, I’ve come to appreciate that Brno is a calm and welcoming city, where different cultures have become part of everyday life. It offers many opportunities, reflected in the respect people show for ethnic and cultural diversity.

Looking back on my first year in Brno, I realize that what once felt unfamiliar has become part of my everyday life. Despite the initial challenges of moving abroad, the city’s multicultural atmosphere has made the transition much easier and more enriching. Living here has not only allowed me to discover new cultures, but also to better understand my own.

Brno has shown me that diversity is not a barrier, but a strength that brings people together. It is a place where differences are respected, shared, and celebrated. This makes me feel like home, even when you are far from where you started.

Have you ever experienced something similar while moving abroad? I’d love to hear your story in the comments!
