#LifeInCzechia Did you know that if you live in the Czech Republic, you need to pay municipal waste fees? No? Then you’re not alone. Every municipality has a different system and the sources about this obligation are scarce – especially in English. Stay informed about your responsibilities and learn more about the prices for 2024 in this article.
Municipal waste fees are different in every Czech city.
Why Do I Need To Pay?
As a society, we produce a lot of garbage. Even if you recycle, the residue still needs to be taken away and processed somehow. The municipal waste fees cover the cost of waste collection and disposal services which costs a lot of money. Let’s be responsible and fulfill our duties!
Brno
In Brno, every single person has to pay the local waste fees for themselves – no matter if you’re renting or owning the property. This also applies to expats and foreign students (including Slovak citizens). The only exception applies to children under 4 years of age and elderly people above 70.
After moving you need to fulfill your informing duty – informing your municipality about your status and registering as a new “fee-payer” as soon as possible. The same applies when you move away. You have 15 days to report any changes.
Keep in mind:
- the municipal waste tax for 2024 is 670 CZK per payer
- The deadline for paying your waste fees is 31 May
- The payment can be done via bank transfer, online, or in person

You can pay your waste fees using the BrnoID.cz portal. Check out this page on how to proceed.
Prague
Prague has a different system. The main difference is that the waste fee is paid by the owner of the property, not every individual separately. Are you renting an apartment? Then you need to pay to the owner for every person living in the flat who is obliged to pay to the municipality. It’s likely included in your lease.
The same informing duty applies – you have 15 days to report the beginning/end of your duty or any other change.
Keep in mind:
- the municipal waste tax for 2024 is calculated accordingly:
0.50 CZK X volume of container in litres X number of containers X number of collections for the given period
(Example: you have one container of 120 litres that is collected once a month. You’ll pay 0.5x120x6 = 360 CZK for a period)
- The deadlines for paying your waste fees are:
- 15 May for the period from 1 January to 30 June
- 15 December for the period from 1 July to 31 December
- The payment can be made via bank transfer, online (Portál Pražana), or in person
Hradec Králové
In Hradec Králové, the payer is both a resident of a property as well as the owner of the property where no residents iare registered. Children under 6 years of age and residents staying abroad for at least one year are exempt. There is also a 50% deduction for children under 14 years of age and seniors above 70.
Keep in mind:
- the municipal waste tax for 2024 is 800 CZK per payer
- The deadline for paying your waste fees is 25 April

Olomouc
Similarly, as in Hradec Králové, the payer is both a resident of a property as well as the owner of the property (where no residents are registered). There is a 50% deduction for children under 16 years of age. You don’t need to pay anything if you’re above 80 OR a student under 26 residing in the university dorms. The fee can be paid either in person or online.

- The deadlines for paying your waste fees are:
- 15 May for the period from 1 November to 30 April
- 15 November for the period from 1 May to 30 October
