From dense forests to dramatic rock formations, the Czech Republic is a Central European country known for its stunning natural beauty. Its landscapes and hiking trails are perfect for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the outdoors.

Especially in the area around Brno, you’ll find places that are truly breathtaking. Here are a few of them near the city centre of Brno.
Moravian Karst
The Moravian Karst (Moravský kras) is one of the most visited and remarkable natural areas in the country. After visiting it, I completely understood why. It is a perfect destination for a day trip and is especially famous for its caves, dramatic landscapes, and unique rock formations.
This karst region covers an area of approximately 100 km². It is characterised by deep valleys, gorges, and extensive cave systems. There are more than 1,100 caves and caverns in the area. Nowadays, only a few of them are open to the public.
The main attraction of the Moravian Karst is the Macocha Abyss. It is probably the most spectacular place in the area. Seeing the depth of the abyss in person is honestly quite breathtaking, especially if you visit on a quiet day and take some time to enjoy the view.
Walking through the surroundings already feels impressive and different from the typical landscape around Brno.
Whether you are a nature lover or simply looking for a peaceful escape from the city, the Moravian Karst offers a truly rewarding experience. I personally found it to be one of the most relaxing and memorable day trips near Brno.
Getting there is also quite easy, as you can travel by train, bus, or car depending on your preference.
If you are planning to visit the caves and explore the area, I definitely recommend it.
Pálava Hills
The Pavlovské vrchy, also known as the Pálava Hills, are a beautiful range of hills located south of Mikulov. It is also near the Austrian border.
What I personally liked most about this place was the atmosphere, the combination of vineyards, and historic ruins. All of these things make the area feel both peaceful and unique.
This landscape is home to the ruins of Děvičky Castle. These ruins date back to the 13th century, as well as Sirotčí hrádek, a medieval castle from the 13th and 14th centuries. Walking through the area while seeing these old ruins in the distance makes the experience feel very special, especially if you enjoy places that combine nature and history.
One of the things that makes Pálava stand out is exactly this mix of history, architecture, and scenic landscapes. It is an ideal destination for people who enjoy hiking while discovering historical landmarks and beautiful viewpoints.
To get to this area, travelling by car is probably the most convenient option, although it is also possible to reach it by train.
Obora Holedná
This forest enclosure is located between the districts of Bystrc, Jundrov, and Kohoutovice. It is one of the places I would recommend if you want to escape the noise of the city for a while. The atmosphere there feels very calm and relaxing, especially compared to the busy centre of Brno.
Along the route, you can admire the preserved woodland of the Brno Woods. It is a perfect place to enjoy gentle valleys and beautiful natural scenery. One of the things I liked most about Obora Holedná is that the paths are very well maintained and easy to follow. This makes the walk enjoyable even for people who are not used to hiking.
The area is also suitable for children. It makes an excellent destination for families or for anyone looking for an easy outdoor activity close to the city. During the walk, visitors may also encounter animals such as wild boars, deer, and mouflons, which makes the experience even more memorable.
If you are looking for a peaceful natural escape without travelling far from Brno, Obora Holedná is definitely a great option.
If you love nature, hiking, and discovering new landscapes, these spots around Brno should definitely be on your list.
