Safe Spaces in Brno: Journey Through Art and Empowerment
I had the privilege of attending a remarkable event that left a deep impact on me. It was part of the Safe Spaces project by Art Connect Women, combining insightful discussions with a powerful art installation.

The Women’s Roles & Rights Panel Discussion
On Wednesday, I participated in a panel discussion at Kumst Brno titled “Roles and Responsibilities of Women within the Home and Work Environment.” Moderated by contemporary artist and director of Art Connect Society, Valentine Svihalek, the panel featured PhDr. Branislava Marvánová Vargová from ROSA – centrum pro ženy, z.s., artist and therapist Andrea Ehret, and Andrea Tkačuková, CEO of Foreigners Group.
The discussion was both engaging and eye-opening. The panelists shared their experiences balancing professional life and motherhood, while also addressing societal pressures to be a “good mother.” It was a safe and supportive environment where real, often difficult conversations took place. Hearing these accomplished women speak about their struggles and triumphs made me reflect on my own experiences and how we can support each other.
The 100 WOMEN Installation: A Space of Strength and Healing
After the panel, I had the chance to explore the 100 WOMEN installation, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most powerful pieces of art I’ve ever experienced. Conceptualized by Valentine Svihalek, the installation served as a sanctuary, a space where women’s strength, joy, and creativity were celebrated, but also where their wounds and traumas were acknowledged.
Using ordinary textiles and paper, the installation tackled the often-taboo topic of domestic violence. Each of the 100 flowers in the installation represented a woman’s voice—some light, symbolizing safety, and others dark, signifying the absence of it. The fact that half of the women surveyed did not feel safe in their own homes was a stark reminder of the ongoing work needed to create safer spaces.
This installation was more than art—it was a statement, a call to action, and a place for reflection.
I highly recommend experiencing it if the opportunity arises.
Reflecting on the Week’s Events
Throughout the week, Art Connect Women hosted a series of impactful events that I was fortunate to attend:
- Thursday, August 22: Klara Siska led a session on “Tapping Into Your Power Through Rituals” at 10:00 AM. This empowering workshop helped participants connect with their inner strength through meaningful rituals.
- Friday, August 23: Kristi Lei hosted an immersive workshop and performance titled “How Music & Art Empower LGBT+ Narratives” at 3:00 PM. It was an enlightening experience that explored the powerful role of art and music in amplifying LGBT+ voices.
- Sunday, August 24: An interactive workshop on Jewish traditions and customs was presented by Stetl at 10:00 AM. This hands-on session provided a fascinating exploration of cultural practices and their significance.
Each event was more than just art or discussion; they were about creating a community of support, understanding, and empowerment.
Get Involved and Support a Great Cause
One of the most inspiring aspects of the Safe Spaces project is its partnership with ROSA – centrum pro ženy, z.s., a Czech non-profit that provides crucial support to women affected by domestic violence. You can still support their work by purchasing artwork or donating directly. Every bit helps in the fight to create safer environments for women everywhere.
If you are in abusive relationship or you are worried about somene close to be affected by domestic violence, you can call free of charge, 24/7 hotline 800 60 50 80.
