Coronavirus in Czechia: Restaurant Gardens and Outdoor Events to Resume Business on 17 May, High Schools to Reopen a Week Later

More restriction relaxations are coming on 17 and 24 May, as the chamber of deputies confirmed on Monday. These relaxations will include the reopening of restaurant gardens, the resuming of outdoor cultural events and the reopening of more schools.

Each of these restriction relaxations will be accompanied by limitations. For example, you won’t be able to go to the restaurant or attend an event without a test (PCR maximum of 7 days old, antigen maximum of 72 hours old), vaccination, or having suffered from COVID-19 within the last 90 days. Additionally, outdoor cultural events are to be limited to 700 people.

Seating at restaurants will be limited to 4 people per table.

Restaurant gardens

According to the Minister of Industry and Trade’s tweet, restaurant gardens will open on 17 May in the following regime:

  • 4 guests maximum at one table, unless they share a household
  • Each customer has to be either vaccinated or tested or have just gone through COVID-19. Customers are allowed to bring their own tests and test themselves at the restaurant. They can also bring a confirmation from their employer that they have been tested negatively within the last 72 hours at work. The rules for tests are the same as with services – PCR cannot be older than 7 days, antigen cannot be older than 72 hours.
  • Social distancing of 1.5 m between tables

Outdoor cultural events

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has also announced that as of 17 May, outdoor cultural events will be allowed to take place under the following conditions:

  • The event is outside
  • The capacity is of 700 people maximum
  • Attendees have to be either tested, 14 days after vaccination or 90 days maximum after going through COVID-19

Indoor cultural events should then be resumed on 24 May.

More pupils and students to come back to school

Next, the Minister of Education has announced that as of 17 May, primary schools will no longer attend school on the rotation principle. If the epidemiological situation keeps improving, the same will be true for middle schools as of 24 May.

24 May could also mark the reopening of high schools (in full regime), including theoretical subjects. Also under the condition of a good epidemiological situation.

Hello! I'm Tereza and I'm a wordsmith and literature nerd from Brno. Although I was born and raised in the Czech Republic, I know all too well from my time living in Texas what it's like to be a "stranger in a strange land." I am excited to share all kinds of information with y'all!

  1. Howdy Tereza,

I enjoy your Texan or Southern drawl. You know y’all? Or “didja” and “didju”?
I’m sure you heard your share of this special southern US speak.
Having traveled extensively through the south, from Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and of course Texas I definitely heard an overabundance of southern drawl speak. Very unique dialog to be sure.

Soon you will acquire your PhD? You said like sometime in June you are finished. Then waht?
    Take care and stay safe.

    1. Hi Dwight!
I should have my defense sometimes in the Spring semester still, but it depends on when I get my reviews. I only have 2/3 at the moment, so it looks like my defense might take place in September (the last month of the Spring semester exam period).

      Take care,
      Tereza

  2. Hi Tereza,

This is an older article. Are restaurant gardens still requiring testing or vaccination to be able to be a customer sitting outdoors at an outdoor cafe?

    Hope you are doing well,
    Stay safe,
    Dwight

    1. Hi Dwight!
Yes, indeed, you still need to prove you don’t have COVID-19 both inside and outside of the restaurant (by showing your vaccination certificate, tests, written confirmation, etc…). I just double-checked on the Ministry of Health’s website. I would link you to the covid.gov.cz website, which is also in English, but it seems like they haven’t updated the latest restriction relaxations yet.

      Take care,
      Tereza
