Public Transportation in Brno: What Tickets to Get and Where

It’s very important in today’s world to use public transport instead of private commuting ways, as we all are facing the problem of traffic jams and air pollution and Brno seems to follow that culture.

Public transportation in Brno as in all parts of the South Moravian Region is provided by Integrovaný dopravní systém Jihomoravského kraje IDS – JMK (the South Moravian Integrated Public Transport System). Tickets are available for any type of public transport, so you just need to focus on you are travelling (there is a specific time for each ticket) and which zones you are going to travel.

You can purchase tickets from any of the yellow ticket vending machines situated at different stops all through the city, or you can buy them at the information centre and newsagents. You can even purchase your ticket straightforwardly from the driver at a more expensive rate. However, we suggest not waste your money! If you have a Czech telephone number you can purchase tickets by sending an instant message which looks like:

BRNO20 – for 20 minutes (20CZK)

BRNO     – for 75 minutes (29 CZK)
BRNOD   – for 24 hours (99 CZK)

Phone number 90206

Also, tickets can only be purchased by coins from those yellow tickets vending machines so don’t forget to keep change always. You can use applications like google Google Maps, Mapy.cz, or IDOS, to plan your destination accordingly. You can see which tram, bus or trolleybus goes to your destination.

If you are planning to stay in Brno for a long time then I would suggest you take the monthly pass or the yearly pass for all sorts of public transport.

As we can see in the image above, we have different zones and each zone has its own transportation rule, so you are thinking that if you buy a ticket in Brno for the 101 zone and expecting it to be working in other zones of Brno, then you are wrong and you have to buy a new ticket there.

IDS – JMK (the South Moravian Integrated Public Transport System) has different types of fare like –  Regular fare, Children*5, Students*6, Pensioners*7, Above 70 years Accompaniment*8, Multiuser. It is better to check before buying tickets. For more details about how to get pass click here.

Also, from next spring, in Brno, we will have a modern method of payment on Brno public transport. Brno Public Transport Company (DPMB) has announced that it will equip its buses, trams, and trolleybuses with a total of 3,000 electronic terminals for card payments next year, known as “validators”. The project will cost about 65 million CZK. In my opinion, it’s good to have this function because it’s always good to use less paper 🙂
