My experiences after 3 months in Czech Republic

These 3 months in Prague have flown by! Between the integration into a Czech lifestyle, relocation, MeetUps, parties with people from different nationalities, small trips outside of Prague, The Czech Beer Festival, and a governing principle with my diploma thesis, I certainly wouldn’t say my time here has been uneventful!

The first month: Integration and Discoveries

From mid-March until April, I had a busy schedule, but not because of the thesis. The integration was easy thanks to Loïs, the French guy who were worked for Foreigners.cz before me. He accommodated me during my first 2 weeks, and then I took over the flat.

By my third weekend in Prague, my childhood friends who were also Erasmus student in Ljubljana, Slovenia, paid a visit to me for 3 days. I didn’t know Prague very well, but we discovered the city together like the Astronomical Clock, Mala Strana, and the Castle, as well as some nice pubs like the Ku-Bar and the Hard Rock Café.

Prague Castle and Mala Strana

One week later, two other friends from my school arrived in Prague for 5 days. We walked a lot in Prague and tried some restaurants and especially the really nice Wine Market in Prague 5, close to the metro station Smichovske nadrazi, on the line B.

And thanks to a French student in Prague, we discovered the Popo Café! An original concept which serves cocktails for 45CZK every Sunday! If you didn’t know it – thank me 🙂

And apart from all of this places to have a good time with your friends, I discovered the Czech life with differences about culture, that you could read in the article How is it to live in Prague for a French Expat.

The second month: Relocation and meetings

At the end of April, I had to move because the owner wanted to sell his house. I left Kotlarka in Prague 5 to settle in Zizkov, in Prague 3. And the difference is big! Admittedly, the quarter is quiet, but there are lot of small shops, restaurants, pubs, an open market 3 times per week, and the big park of Riegrovy Sady, and it’s closer to the city center than Kotlarka.

Zizkov and the TV Tower

Anecdote: I take the same tramway line to go to work, but from the other side.

I also discovered an international collocation. At the beginning we were 2 French and 1 Italian guy, but after a few weeks, a Norwegian guy replaced the French girl. Even if for the moment, we were busy by the work, exams and the thesis, it was a very nice experience.

I met also other students, visited new places in Prague like Namesti Miru, Vinohrady, parks of Stromovka and Letna (ideal to run)

For now, I didn’t visit lot of cities in Czech Republic, only Kutna Hora and Brno. And what can I say about Brno!? A very calm city, but with a lot of Erasmus Student, with a pleasant atmosphere, one similar to what we could find in a Mediterranean village.

The third month: Effort and comfort

Last weeks were so intense. Between the internship and the diploma thesis to finish, I didn’t take the time to go out and enjoy Prague. But I was in Brno 10 days ago to participate to the volley-ball tournament organized by the company. But before this tournament which was on Saturday, I met foreigners.cz members came from other cities of Czech Republic. We were only between guys and it was so fun to discover Brno’s nightlife with them.

The volley-ball tournament

8 teams of 6-8 persons were at the International School of Brno, to play volley-ball and meet together. The tournament was organized in 2 pools of 4 teams, like small championships. Then the 2 bests of each were in semi-final then the final. Everybody takes pleasure with this sunny and happy day.

I finished my diploma thesis after this weekend in Brno and now, I enjoy a little bit more the life in Prague 🙂

My impressions

These 3 first months in Prague were so busy and fasts, I was never bored. Even if I think it’s easier to arrive in a new city knowing other people here, the integration is fast. I lived the snow, the warm, flood, and now I ready to live the summer in Prague!
