The First Application for a Long-term Residence Permit to Study in the Czech Republic and Longer Health Insurance

Are you a student who is accepted for an accredited university program in the Czech Republic and applying for a long-term residence permit with the purpose of studies for the first time? Then we have an advice for you: health insurance arranged for a longer period than 1 year is more convenient in your case.

Apart from nationals of the countries that have a visa-free regime with the Czech Republic, all other students who are heading to study at the Czech university need to apply for a long-term residence permit with the purpose of studies. The advice on longer health insurance arranged is relevant to the first application.

When you are applying for the long-term residence permit at the Czech embassy in your home country, remember it will probably take between 2 and 3 months or even longer to have it proceeded. The official time limit is 90 days stated by the Czech immigration law. Nevertheless, it might happen that the embassy will exceed this limit. Therefore, it is better for you to apply for health insurance which is longer than a year (1 year and 2-3 months or longer). Why?

Let’s imagine the following situation:

You as a student who needs a permit to stay in the Czech Republic file an application for the long-term residence permit in May 2019. Then it takes between 2 and 3 months to get your permit (you have it your hands in July-August 2019). If you have your health insurance arranged only for 1 year, then the new residence permit is valid for less than 1 year (till May 2020 only). Therefore, it is recommended to apply for your health insurance for 1 year and 2-3 months long (from May 2019 to July-August 2020) so the validity of your residence permit is really 1 year (from August 2019 to August 2020, for example).

Congratulations! Once your long-term residence permit application is processed, you can come to the MOI (Ministry of Interior) office in the Czech Republic for biometrics and get your long-term residence permit card to keep in the pocket!

If you want to get your health insurance you can contact Foreigners and we will arrange it for you in the cooperation with the Slavia insurance company. Slavia offers health insurance for any amount of months you want, for ex. 15, 18 or 24 months (you pay extra money depending on the number of the months).
