A Life with a Dog in Brno

When arriving to a foreign country, one may immediately realise: I need a friend! Some people make a lot of acquaintances, and some are searching for pets: either a dog, cat or any other. In this article you have a chance to take a closer look at how a life with a dog in Brno looks like.

Do I have to pay a fee for a dog?

One of the first questions that might pop up in your head is whether you should pay a fee for having a dog. Throughout the whole Czech Republic it’s necessarily to pay for a dog, although the amount varies depending on a region. A fee is paid for a three-month old dog and older by a person who has a permanent or long-term residence or owns a company with its registered office in Brno. The first thing you need to is to register a dog in municipality within 15 days since acquiring. You’ll get a registration stamp which in fact says that a dog is officially registered and whenever inspection comes you should always demonstrate this stamp.

Where can I walk my dog?

Even though Brno is very tolerant of dogs, you can’t really walk a dog wherever you like. The size of the dog also matters, some restaurants and bars don’t mind small dogs, as long as they are not barking and generally behave well. A very good place to walk a dog is parks and forests: Lužánky, Bystrc, Mariánské Údolí, Palackého vrch and, of course, there are also some places where you can train your dog and teach them to jump over obstacles. The website listing these places is in Czech, so here is a little hint for you if you don’t understand Czech: look for bold names of the streets.

It’s also important to mention how you can travel with dogs on public transport: they are always obliged to have a leash and a muzzle. In addition, if you own a three-month pass (in Czech “šalinkarta”), you don’t have to buy a ticket for your dog. In other cases you have to purchase a reduced ticket for your dog.

Can I adopt a dog while I’m staying in Brno?

It’s a very popular thing among non-profit organisations in Brno: they are often looking for people who could adopt a dog for a certain period of time. Usually it’s dogs who can’t live in shelter or are in recovery. Note that these dogs had usually been through something terrible, for example, a puppy farm. They might not have hygienic habits and it’s not good to leave them alone for a while. One of our teammates has a nice experience with adoption organisation Dočasky.cz, so if you’re eager to help some dogs, feel free to contact them!

Is it hard to find a flat where I can live with a dog?

It is! However, don’t get scared: most landlords don’t usually have problems with small and middle-sized dogs; for an additional charge (normally 3000 Czech crowns) you can live at your dream flat with your beloved dog! Our relocation consultants highly recommend you to film your dog and send a landlord a video, so they are aware of how well-trained (and cute of course!) your dog is. The thing is that landlords often care about furniture and in what condition it’s going to be after you move out.

If you’re currently in a search for a flat, take a look at our web and find your dream one just now!
