Green Thursday

For me it is totally a new event we do not have something of the same kind in France. The name “Maundy Thursday” comes from the Latin Dias Mandatum, which is the “day of the new commandment,” the new commandment being that Christians should love one another, just as Christ has loved them. Maundy Thursday is the Christian feast, or holy day, falling on the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the Maundy and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles as described in the Canonical gospels. It is the fifth day of Holy Week, and is preceded by Holy Wednesday and followed by Good Friday. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the day is called Zelený čtvrtek or Zelený štvrtok respectively, again meaning “Green Thursday”. Because the church bells fall silent until Holy Saturday, here called “White Saturday”, because “they have flown to Rome”, in some regions they are replaced by groups of children walking round their village and making noise with wooden rattles. It is customary to give them some money. Czechs say that everyone should eat or drink something green on Maundy Thursday. Starobrno brewery has been using this as a popular marketing tool, brewing a special, strong green beer just once a year. You can found different brant of beer like: Richard, Pegas and Starobrno. The Thursday before Easter is known as green thursday in Czech. Consequently, you are supposed to consume something green. The breweries have caught onto this and now produce green beer but once a year on this thursday. It’s remarkably popular and beats eating spinach! If you want to be a part of a huge partying crowd, the brewery is the place to go on the Thursday night. And more especially I recommend to you this event.
